CNG Full Form- Compressed Natural Gas

The short form CNG stands for “Compressed Natural Gas.”

CNG is prepared by compressing natural gas which consists of methane, CHas the main component in less than 1% of the volume such that it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of 20–25 MPa (2,900–3,600 psi), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes.

CNG is mainly comprised of methane gas which produces engine power when it is mixed with their air and it is faded into an engine’s combustion chamber. So, it is used as a substitute for Petrol, Diesel, and Propane/LPG.

The advantage of using a CNG Compressed Natural Gas is that it is more effective to control air pollution in comparison to Diesel, Petrol, LPG Since it produces fewer undesirable gases. So it is more environment-friendly than other fuel products. It is higher safe and secure than other substitutes in the case of the spill due to it is lighter than air and disperses quickly when released.

CNG’s volumetric energy density is estimated to be 42 percent that of liquefied natural gas and 25 percent that of diesel fuel.

History of CNG

  • The use of natural gas as a substitute for diesel and petrol for vehicles was introduced in the late-1800s.
  • The very first Natural Gas Vehicle was registered in the USA.
  • Italy and various other European countries adopted CNG as a primary fuel just after the completion of 2nd world war.
  1. CNG is produced from over oil deposits. It can be also collected from the wastewater treatment plants and landfills.
  2. CNG is prepared by compressing natural gas which consists of methane, CHas the main component in less than 1% of the volume such that it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure.
  3. It is stored and distributed in very hard spherical or cylindrical containers at the pressure of 20 – 25 MPa.

Usage of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)

  • CNG – Compressed Natural Gas is used in internal modified combustion engines.
  • It is used mainly in buses throughout the world along with three-wheeler Autos.
  • The very first Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) was registered in the USA.
  • Italy and various other European countries adopted CNG as a primary fuel just after the completion of 2nd world war.

Properties of CNG

The following are basic properties of CNG gas. Check them out:

  • Colorless
  • Odorless
  • Tasteless
  • Non-toxic
  • Non-corrosive
  • 40% lighter than air
  • High ignition temperature

CNG Advantages

  • It is cheaper than its other substitutes such as Petrol, Diesel, etc.
  • It is more environment-friendly that its other substitutes because it emits less undesirable and harmful gases compare to them.
  • It provides a high auto-ignition temperature of 540 degree Celsius or more.
  • It also enhances the life of lubricant oils due to it does not contaminate and also does not dilute the crankcase oil.
  • The maintenance cost is also very low as compared to its other substitutes.
