What is the full form of ELISA

Full Form of ELISA is Enzyme-linked Immune Sorbent Assay

The full form of ELISA is Enzyme-linked Immune Sorbent Assay. Basically, it is a medical test which detects and measure the presence of antibodies in the blood sample of a person.

Such antibodies mainly produce in response to the infectious substances called antigens. By this test, if there is the presence of antibodies is confirmed in the blood sample, then it confirmed that there is a presence of antigens in the blood. That is the test is positive and the person is suffering from a disease.

In addition to its simplicity, it is also a highly sensitive test because of, it is used to identify numbers of antibody and antigen in the body such as toxins, viruses, hormones, etc.

ELISA Uses – Uses of ELISA Test

The term ELISA was very firstly used Engvall & Perlman in 1971.  The ELISA test was produced in 1970.

ELISA helps in diagnosing a number of diseases. The followings are some major:

  • AIDS
  • Lyme disease
  • Rotavirus
  • Pernicious anaemia
  • Syphilis
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Zika virus

ELISA Key Features – ELISA Advantages

  • It has high sensitivity and specificity. So, it can be used to detect antigens easily.
  • It has very less error probability.
  • It can be used to detect a large number of infections.
  • It is a quick procedure as well as easy to perform.
  • You can also read the result of quantitative ELISA visually.
  • ELISA test reagents are stable. So, can be distributed to any area.
  • ELISA does not require any radioisotopes or a radiation counter.
  • It can detect infection in the early stages of infection.
  • In addition to its simplicity, it is also a highly sensitive test
  • Only Sophisticated equipment along with skilled technicians are needed to perform the test.
  • It involves the used of immunosorbent and an enzyme system.
  • It can screen a large number of specimens at a time so multiple tests can be done at one time.
